Medicare Enrollment Periods

DelVal Senior Advisors helps seniors turning 65 throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey understand Medicare enrollment and pick the right Medicare health insurance plan.

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

  • This is the period for most people when they are first eligible for Medicare
  • The period lasts 7 months (3 months before you turn 65, the month you turn 65 and 3 months after you turn 65
  • If you sign up during the 3 months before you turn 65 your benefits begin on the first of the month you turn 65

General Enrollment Period

  • This is the period when you can sign up for Part A and/or Part B if you did not sign up when first eligible
  • The sign up period is Jan, Feb and Mar.
  • Your coverage will begin July 1

Medigap Open Enrollment Period

  • This period begins the first month you turn 65 AND are enrolled in Part B
  • The period lasts six months.
  • This period provides you a guaranteed right to buy any Medigap policy sold in your state regardless of your health status

Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)

  • This is the period when a person can enroll or switch a Medicare Advantage and/or Part D prescription plan for the coming year.
  • A person may also drop their MA or MA-PD plan and return to Original Medicare
  • The period lasts from October 15 to December 7.

Annual Disenrollment Enrollment Period (ADEP)

  • A person may drop their MA or MA-PD plan and return to Original Medicare
  • Enroll in a Part D Prescription Drug plan if disenrolling  MAPD plan
  • Apply for a Medigap (Medicare Supplement) policy (medical underwriting may be required).
  • The period lasts from January 1 to February 14

Special Election Period (SEP)

Note: these are just a few SEP scenarios

  • You are losing your employer or union group coverage
  • You enrolled in a MA or MA-PD plan when first eligible and want to return to Original Medicare within the first year
  • You have moved out of an MA or MA-PD‘s service area.
  • The period lasts from January 1 to December 31
